The Correct Hijāb

The purpose of Hijāb is to conceal a woman's beauty, not to become a form of beautification itself. It would therefore be contradictory for the Hijāb to be adorned or designed in a way that draws attention. In the Qur’ān, Allāh commands women to cover their زينة (beautification), except for what is naturally visible.

خُمُرِهِنَّ (khumurihinna) and جَلَٰبِيبِهِنَّ (jalābībihinna) are garment covers mentioned in the Qur’ān that prescribed to cover a woman’s زِينَة (zīnah) — her beautification.

The Conditions of Correct Hijāb

  • Covers Everything Except What is Exempt: Being in Hijāb is covering the entire body, head to toe, except what ordinary must show which can be the face, hands, feet (according to most Islamic viewpoints) in that there is no sort of beautification.
  • No Tabarruj/Beautifying: The covering should not attract unnecessary attention such as with excessive designs or adornments like jewelry. No makeup. No heavy fragrances. Hijab is simple without extravagance.
  • Not See-Through: It should not be sheer, ensuring that it properly conceals.
  • Not Tight-Fitting: It should not be tight or reveal the figure shape.
  • Feminine and Modest: Being feminine and modest in appearance and actions.  A modest attitude, reflecting decency in speech and actions. Style should not resemble men or the kuffar.
  • Know it's for Modesty, Not Fashion: Your in Hijāb for modesty and obedience to Allāh, not for style or trends.

Hijāb is never fashion. Do not modernize it. Do not pollute the purpose of Hijāb. When the purpose of Hijāb gets lost, covering becomes a hypocrisy.
